BEAULIEU CARPET MILLS

My name is Aaron Ratner. In December of 2008, my wife Adi and I decided to
drive from Delaware to Utah to visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Having
seen the series on TV and reading the book about their amazing story, we
decided that we had to see this amazing place with our own eyes. Adi and
drove through ice storms, snow storms, and the windy Midwest to get there.
Throughout our travels, and for months before, my wife would look at the
profiles of the puppies at Best Friends and hope to get to meet them.
Although we had agreed that the three dogs we already had was enough, we
both knew we would likely be going home with number four. One of the great
people aptly pointed out "One dog for each hand" and we figured it made
sense.

We had originally planned on meeting a dog named Shiloh. He was a special
needs puppy that on paper would have been a great fit. Once we met him,
however, we realized that his demeanor would not work with our pack. Adi
had found the story of Ali moving with especially the line 'Why doesn't
anyone ever choose me'. So we met with Ali and we realized that his shy
nature would be fine for our pack. He seemed sweet but scared of almost
everything. We saw his potential. Wanting to name the dog something
meaningful, I joked we should call him Utah and the name stuck.

Utah, Adi and I started our 2500 mile trek back east with the puppy in the
back of the SUV. He had his little bed and seemed very happy. Three days
later, at about 1am we made it home, eager to introduce Utah to Delaware.
Knowing one of his issues was shiny floors, we coaxed Utah into the house.
He went in easy enough and up the carpeted stairs. When he made it up to
the wood flow, he stopped short and didn't want to move. We wanted him to
feel his way out, and he did, right onto the recliner. He perched himself
there to survey his new home. If there was ever doubt he would fit in.it
was one at that point.

Utah has been coming out of his shell slowly but surely. He is a stubborn
boy who loves to bay at any truck that drives by. He has taken his place in
the house and with a little trepidation will hop from carpet lily pad to
carpet lily pad. He now plays freely with his big sister and tolerates his
younger brother. The eldest dog doesn't bother with herself with anyone.

We enjoyed our time in Utah. We can't wait to get back there again.
Hopefully we can make it out without puppy number five.
